Overview

Abzan Armor channels the endurance and tenacity of the Abzan clan into a counters-based midrange strategy. The deck places +1/+1 counters on creatures aggressively, then uses those counters as currency: creatures with them get bigger, draw cards, survive removal, and outlast opponents in prolonged games. The Abzan have always won through attrition, and this deck captures that philosophy perfectly.

The engine has two overlapping layers: cards that add counters to multiple creatures at once (like Cathars' Crusade) and cards that care about counters already present (like Inspiring Call or Champion of Lambholt). Running both creates a self-reinforcing loop where each new creature entering the battlefield makes all your other creatures more powerful.

Key Cards

Cathars' Crusade
Counter Engine · Enchantment
The deck's premier scaling engine. Every creature entering the battlefield under your control gives all other creatures a +1/+1 counter. With token generators in play, a single token-producing spell can add counters to every creature simultaneously, creating an explosive board state.
Hardened Scales
Counter Amplifier · One-Drop
A one-mana enchantment that adds an extra counter whenever one or more counters would be placed on a creature. It does not look impressive on its own, but in a deck that adds counters to many creatures constantly, Hardened Scales multiplies your advantage every turn without drawing attention.
Inspiring Call
Card Draw · Protection
Draw a card for each creature with a +1/+1 counter on it, then give all those creatures indestructible until end of turn. In a deck that consistently runs six or more countered creatures, this cantrip becomes a one-sided wrath protection spell that refills your hand while surviving the opponent's sweeper.
Champion of Lambholt
Evasion · Counter Payoff
Creatures cannot block your attackers unless they have more power than the Champion's toughness. In a counters deck, this creature grows large rapidly and quickly makes your entire board unblockable. It converts a wall of countered creatures into guaranteed combat damage, often winning the game through pure evasion.

Playing the Deck

The early game is about establishing mana and landing one or two counter-enabling creatures. A turn two Hardened Scales is your ideal opening as it multiplies everything that follows. Avoid overcommitting to the board before you have protection: without Inspiring Call in hand, a board wipe at a full table is genuinely devastating.

The mid game begins once you have a token generator or counter-spreading effect online alongside a payoff creature. Cathars' Crusade combined with any token producer creates a runaway counter spiral that opponents cannot ignore. Use the board pressure to draw removal and counterspells from the table, saving your own interaction for the biggest threats to your engine.

In the late game the deck wins through combat overwhelm. Champion of Lambholt or other evasion enablers make your countered army effectively unblockable. The WBG colour identity also provides the broadest removal suite in the game, meaning you are never without answers to specific problem permanents even if your engine is temporarily stalled.

Strengths & Weaknesses

Strengths: The deck snowballs rapidly once the counter engine is established and is very difficult to stop through creature removal alone because each new creature you deploy immediately grows the rest. Inspiring Call provides a reliable one-sided wrath protection tool that keeps the board intact through sweepers. The WBG removal package handles nearly any permanent type.

Weaknesses: The deck can run out of gas if sweepers resolve repeatedly before the engine is established, and enchantment removal that takes out Cathars' Crusade or Hardened Scales significantly slows the gameplan. The strategy also has limited interaction on the stack: this is a fair midrange deck, not a control deck, and it can struggle against combo strategies that win before turn six.

Verdict
Abzan Armor is a clean, coherent precon that delivers on the Abzan clan fantasy of slow, grinding inevitability. The counter synergies are well supported across the 99 cards, and the deck rewards players who understand when to press advantages and when to hold up interaction. It is an excellent entry point for new players who want to learn midrange strategy, and a solid foundation for experienced players looking to build toward a competitive Abzan counters list. If you want a deck that wins by being harder to kill than your opponents, this is the one.
